Growing Sweet Potato Vines Indoors

During the winter months you can still get your sweet potato plants ready for spring planting. All you have to do is grow your sweet potato vines indoors in a container. This is one of those gardening projects that almost anyone can do including the kids, so why not get everyone involved. Perhaps setup a little in house competition to see who can grow the bushiest vine. Sweet potatoes are planted by the sips these come from the rooted bits of the vines, which sprout from the potatoes buds. It is not a complicated process, you can set this up today.

How To Grow A Sweet Potato Vine Indoors

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Sweet Potato
  • Container (e.g. glass jar)
  • Water
  • Fertilizer
  • Toothpicks

Fill your container or jar with water. Stick some toothpicks into the sides of the sweet potato so that at least one third of it is left standing above the water. Balance it on top of your jar. Maintenance will involve cutting the vines if they become too long, adding some fertilizer and changing the water at least once a month. Keep the jar in an area that gets a lot of sunshine. Your first vine with a few stems should began sprouting within a few weeks. Transplant the vines in May, and they should be ready to harvest in the Fall.
