How To Grow A Second Crop Of Tomatoes

So today I discovered a sneaky way to harvest two crops of tomatoes this year. I wish I had known this last year, but will definitely use it this year.

The best part is you do not need to plant two sets of seeds or seedlings, the second crop comes from the suckers of your first crop.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • tomato plants
  • jars
  • water
  • stake or cage
  • fertilizer
  • labels (optional)
  • potting soil (optional)
  • wet sand or vermiculite (optional)
  • containers (optional)

The timing of when to remove the suckers is very important. The ideal number of days to allow for the fruit to mature before the frost is at least 85 days before the first frost.

Only remove suckers that are 5 to 6 inches long. The choice is yours whether to root them or plant them directly into your garden. Rooted suckers require 14 to 21 days before they are ready to be transplanted.

These suckers can grow to mature plants that will produce a second crop as late as early December. Just treat the plants as you would any of your other tomato plants.
