DIY Vertical Strawberry Tube Planter

Strawberries, red, juicy and yummy! Ok, let me snap out of it and quickly share with you a cool vertical strawberry tube planter I just discovered today. It is made from PVC downpipe and allows you to grow a whole bunch of strawberries. The plants will grow upwards, hence you will need less space when you use this planter. Also by growing your strawberries vertically you keep them safe away from bugs and other pests that may want to get a little nibble.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • An electric drill
  • A 2 or 3mm drillbit
  • PVC downpipe 100mm or 150mm diameter.
  • End cap
  • A narrower diameter (15mm or so) length of downpipe for watering.
  • A cork
  • A knife
  • Duct tape
  • A length of geotextile (or hessian would do)
  • Twine
  • Good fertile soil
  • 1 litre coarse gravel
  • Strawberry plants
  • A few companion plants (nasturtiums or marigolds)
  • Large tub or box
  • Fixing collar or ties

Whoa! I know that is a long list of things you’ll need, however the actual building process itself is just 7 steps. You start by determining the length of your planter and watering tubes. You then drill the vent holes and put the geotextile in place. You fill the planter with soil, plant your strawberries and then finally place the planter in the perfect location that promotes growth.
