There is a reason why in elementary school, the greedy kids are often labelled ‘greedy pigs’. These animals can eat and just won’t stop eating all day long. It is a great way to re-purpose any old tires or leaking rain barrels you may have lying around your homestead. The project itself is simple and straight forward. A few measurements, a few holes, easy assembly and you have your feeder. Using this setup, you can fill up the rain barrel and go for a whole day or more at a time without worrying about refilling their feed.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- old tire
- old rain barrel
- hole saw
- handheld drill
- measuring tape
- round plywood
- marker
- reciprocating saw
- cinder blocks
- wood pallet (optional)
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1.
Flip the barrel upside down so that you
can measure out holes 2″ above the bottom
and 3″ to 4″ apart.
Step 2.
Use the drill with the hole saw attachment
to drill holes 2″ in diameter the whole
around the barrel at the marked spots.
Step 3.
Remove the top half of the tire.
Step 4.
Measure out the round plywood to make sure
that it covers the inner rim section of the old tire.
Step 5.
Sit the the barrel on top of the plywood,
and place the cinder blocks inside to weigh
down the barrel before filling it up with feed.
When there is feed in the barrel, it should automatically flow down into the tire catchment area as the pigs enjoy the feed. Make sure when you cut the tire, you remove enough to allow the pigs to easily stick their heads in and access the feed. With this kind of setup you should be able to go for a few days without filling up the barrel, depending on the number of pigs in the pen, of course. You can sit the feeder on a wood pallet, if you need a flat surface.
