DIY Rain Water Catchment System

One of the first things we worked on when we first moved onto our homestead was establishing a water source. Now we have buily several ways of collecting water from the diy stand alone rain collector to the diy garbage can rain barrel to the diy gutterless rain barrel system. We are thinking of adding this diy rain water catchment system too. Why not?

After all it is very easy to set up, it takes about 30 minutes only. The total cost for this project if you are going to head out and buy all the required materials is just below US $150. As you know, I have be come a master of re-purposing and reusing stuff, so I m pretty sure we can cut that budget to astronomically low levels. It’s the  simple art of being ‘cheap’. LOL

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The best location for this system, is an open area free of trees. You don’t want leaves to clog the system. Place some cement blocks and sit the barrel on top, this makes it easier to access the water as the tap is elevated. The tarp needs a hole the same size as the one on top of the barrel.

Once the tarp is centered above the hole, you can then screw on the mesh using the screws. At this point you are free to add an additional filter, if you like. The rocks and gravel act as both a weight to hold the tarp down and also as a filter. The tarp will be held up by posts in the ground. Apparently just an inch of rain will fill up the barrel, so that’s awesome.
