DIY Portable Solar Generator

Solar energy always gets me really excited. Why would I not be excited about getting free power from renewable resources. I will get hubby to build this diy portable solar generator for our homestead.

You can use this generator to power lights, a radio and recharge batteries. The lights can run all night long. Total project cost is slightly below $300, that is if you go out and buy everything.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 15 watt solar panel
  • 7 amp charge controller
  • 800 watt power inverter
  • deep cycle battery
  • 12 volt outlet
  • digital multimeter
  • style electrical connectors
  • 1/2″ plywood
  • hinges
  • handles
  • latches
  • screws
  • zinc plated “l” brackets

The first thing he did for this project was build the wooden box, that houses the battery. Do not forget to drill the ventilation holes in the top section to allow airflow.

Once the wooden box is completed, all that is left to do is to connect everything so that your charger is functional. As long as the battery is charged you can pretty much run a multitude of electrical appliances.
