DIY Milk Crate Composter

Let us be honest, you are not really a gardener if you do not have a compost. I mean seriously who does that? LOL. We personally have a couple of them, from the diy compost tumbler to the diy 3 bin compost bin, so yes we are REAL gardeners. Today I decided to try this diy milk crate composter, why not?

What I love about this project, is that you can re-use and find most of the stuff for free around the home. Don’t you love those projects that cost you nothing, I do. Also this will not take too much of your time, it is pretty much assembly things together as you would some LEGOs.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • milk crates
  • mesh/screen
  • newspaper
  • weed barrier fabric
  • scissors
  • wood
  • hand drill
  • saw
  • old drawer handles
  • organic waste
  • varnish
  • rag
  • paint
  • old mosquito net (optional)

Clean your crates before you begin, some go as far as painting them but that was way too much work for me. Then you have to hot glue the weed barrier fabric or mosquito net inside the crates. This prevents pests going in whilst allowing much needed air and water in.

The wood from the drawers is perfect for making the lid as well as a base if you need one. Assembling the composter is simple too. Just go ahead lay some newspaper on the bottom of each crate and then stack the crates on top of each other. That’s it you are ready to start composting, fill your top crate with organic material.
