DIY Manual Chainsaw

A chainsaw is always a handy thing to have on the homestead. You never know when you need to cut down a tree or log. We have one of those stainless steel saws, that two people pull from both ends. I found this diy manual chainsaw, which seems more portable and handy.

I love that this chain is so simple to build, but it still does the job. The materials needed are available from any local hardware store. This manual chainsaw can be operated by one or two persons, although it only cuts in one direction.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • chain saw chain
  • nylon webbing
  • waxed linen thread
  • paracord or nylon string
  • needle
  • band saw
  • matches
  • hack saw (optional)

Alright so the first thing we had to do was break the chain saw, we did not have a band saw hence we used a hacksaw and that took a very long time. The handles are made from the nylon tube webbing. You need about 18 inches and make sure you melt each of the ends. The chain itself goes about 6 inches into the webbing on either side.

In order to keep the chain inside the webbing, you will rely on your tailor skills. This was my job since I am the one who is good with the needle. I just sewed around the chain, and made sure everything was tight. To extend the life of your saw, you may want to wrap the ends tightly with the linen thread too.

To use: Simply pull back and forth on the two ends.
