DIY Grit And Oyster Shell Feeder

Are you feeding your chickens grit and oyster shells? They need it so they can be able to digest their food properly. I found this grit and oyster shell feeder on Pinterest the other day.

It looks easy to build, the only problem is that I could not find any plans for the feeder just the pictures. It is made from plywood and PVC both affordable materials.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • plywood
  • 2″ PVC pipe
  • wood screws or nails
  • hand drill or hammer
  • utility knife
  • hinges
  • maker (optional)
  • circular saw

Here’s how I would reverse engineer the photograph above and build my own version.

Step 1.

Starting with the backboard, cut it about a foot in length. Cut the top section at a 45 degree angle for the top cover to rest on.

Step 2.

Then move on to the bottom tray that holds the grit and oyster. Attach the four side boards as in the photo, to provide a little depth to the tray. Use nails or screws to keep everything together.

Step 3.

Attach the tray to the back board. Then cut your PVC pipe, into two equal lengths with the top cut at the same 45 degree angle as the backboard top.

Step 4.

Shape off the bottom of the PVC pipe in a concave like shape, to allow the grit and oyster shell to fall into the bottom tray.

Step 5.

Attach the two PVC pipes to the back board using two screws at the top for each one. Make sure you attach one pipe in each section of the tray.

Step 6.

Before you attach the feeder to your coop, attach the lid using your hinges. The slanted cover prevents the chickens from roosting on the feeder.

Step 7.

Last, but not least find and area in the coop to attach the feeder. Then you can fill each PVC pipe with either grit or oyster.

Step 8.

Mark the PVC pipes, so you know what goes into each pipe in the future.

This is my version, how I would go about building the grit and shell feeder for my chickens. Feel free to use my step by step plan or you can do it your own way.
