DIY Garden Soil Solarization

If there is one thing that gets on my nerves as a gardener is those pesky weeds. Why can’t they just leave my plants alone, huh? I think this coming season I am going to try this diy soil solarization method, I discovered today.

What is soil solarization? It is the process of using the sun to kill all the weeds and other pests in your garden before you plant your seeds. You can ultimately increase the nutrient levels and prevent the use of pesticides.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • irrigation system
  • rebar or thin pipe
  • plastic tarp
  • garden tools

The actual process involves four steps. You first remove all the old plants and weeds, then you level the soil, before irrigating and placing the plastic tarp over the prepared area.

Make sure you irrigate the soil at least one foot deep before covering with the plastic tarp. The tarp should cover the area for at least 4 to 6 weeks.

The high temperature of up to 140 degrees F, will heat up and kill any weeds in the covered area. Uncover the area and plant your garden after the process is complete.
