If you follow my blog, you may have noticed I haven’t made too many flower gardening posts. That is mainly because I spend so much time growing food and taking care of the livestock, that I never really have time to try out things like this really cute diy container water garden, I saw on Pinterest.

I love the presentation and also how simple this project is. Not only to you get to grow some plants, you will need fish to keep your garden healthy. My kids have volunteered to keep the fish fed, so that is less maitenance work for me to worry about. Your plants can be purchased from a local nursery and all the other materials from Walmart. The total cost for this project will be about $40 only.

Here’s What You’ll Need

• large wide container
• small containers
• water lillies
• water lettuce
• water mint
• canna lilly
• potting soil
• fish
• fish food
• fish net
• mosquito dunks
• rocks
• water
• aquatic fertilizer (optional)
• miracle gro (optional)
• water pump kit (optional)
• lighting (optional)

After you have found a nice sunny place to locate your garden, begin by filling your smaller pots with potting soil. You will plant your water lillies and marginals in these pots, remembering to put a layer of rocks on top of the potting soil to prevent it from floating. Arrange the smaller pots inside the container, fill with water and add the mosquito dunks.

The fish can be added about 72 hours later and should be fed every 48 hours or so. This type of garden does not need watering, however the water will need to be changed once every 7 to 14 days. The fish takes care of the algae however the water still turns murky. Installing a water pond kit, will help with keeping the water clean as well as the mosquitos.
