A toilet is one of the basic human needs, at some point you will need to go. Of course you can just run into the woods and do your business there. However, most people living off the grid choose to build an outhouse. I found another easy to implement solution today, this diy composting toilet.

Very simple project, you will be done in less than 30 minutes. As for the materials needed, you can pretty much easily find these for next to nothing too. It is therefore not an expensive project too.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• old toilet seat
• 2×4 lumber
• wood screws
• 5 gallon plastic buckets
• plywood
• jig saw or hacksaw
• hand drill or screw driver
• saw dust or wood ash or crushed dry leaves or straw
• marker (optional)

The first step in this project involves sawing a hole the same size as your plastic buckets in the plywood. I would recommend that you trace out an outline of the bucket and then use that to cut out the hole. Don’t forget to leave enough space on one of the edges to mark and attach the hardware for the toilet seat. The plywood with the toilet seat is supported by four 2x4s the same length as the bucket, one screwed into each corner.

Before you use the toilet, make sure you have an intial layer of dry material in the bucket, which should be lined up directly below the hole in the toilet seat. Cover with more dry material, which you can keep in another bucket next to your toilet, after each use. The material has to be left to compost for at least a year before you can use it in the garden.
