Almost everytime we are planting something we always use our compost. We have built a diy $5 compost bin, a  diy 3 bin compost system, and we used grandmas secret compost weapon  on the other one. So today I decided to try this idea, I have been putting away for a while. It is this diy compost tumbler idea, should be fun?

The tumbler is supposed to help you when it comes to containing your compost and also speeds up the decomposition inside. It is made from cheap materials that you can either grab from your local hardware store or salvage from around your homestead. Just make sure you use a food grade plastic bucket, for this project, the size is not really an issue.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 7 gallon plastic bucket with lid
  • 2″ PVC flush-cleanout plugs
  • 2″ PVC female-threaded adapters
  • PVC piping
  • 1″ PVC female-threaded adapters
  • 1″ PVC threaded plugs
  • 2″ PVC threaded plug
  • 1″ PVC slip caps
  • 2×4 lumber
  • hex nuts and bolts
  • flat washers
  • wood screws
  • tape measure
  • safety glasses
  • hand drill and drill bits
  • gloves
  • pencil or marker
  • hacksaw or handsaw (optional)

The first thing you have to do is to mark and drill tw holes on opposite ends of each other in the vertical center of the bucket. Then do the same about a quarter of the way from the bottom of the bucket, before drilling a hole in the bottom. A PVC plug goes into the bottom hole which you should drill more holes in for drainage.

Use the PVC fixtures to make the center pivot bar and the side ventilation for your tumber. The last thing that you build is the frame using the the lumber and the wood screws. When the frame is complete the tumbler should be able to freely make a 360 degree tumble, without any restrictions. That’s it, you are ready to start tumbling your compost.
