DIY Burlap Grow Box

Grow boxes often make gardening more interesting, especially if you have limited space or want to enjoy indoor gardening. A few months back we made this diy Alaska grow box, which we have used to grow a lot of healthy veggies. You know I love to experiment, so today I decided to take on this diy burlap grow box.

I couldn’t resist it, it looked so pretty and was just asking for me to try make one. The grow box is 2 X 2 X 3 feet in size. However you can grow so many things in it, from beans, to onions, to kale to strawberries to herbs to lettuce. Pretty much anything you would grow in your garden. You can even put wheels on it and make it portable, just wheel it wherever you want it to go. Cool, huh?

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • chop saw
  • hand drill
  • wood screws
  • scissors
  • hammer
  • u shaped nails
  • staple gun
  • 2×4 boards
  • chicken wire
  • 3/4″ PVC pipe
  • burlap
  • landscape fabric
  • 5 bags organic potting soil
  • organic soil
  • plants or seeds
  • castors
  • tape measure
  • marker
  • bamboo teepee (optional)

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

DIY Grow Box

Measure and cut your 2×4 boards using chop saw. You want to have
4 X 32″ boards, 4 X 17″ boards, 4 X 21″ boards and 4 X 24″ boards.

Step 2.

Cut the PVC pipe into 4 X 31″ long pieces and the take your drill
and drill holes 4″ apart the full length of your all your pipes.

Step 3.

It’s time to build the frame. Take 2 x 32″ boards and 2 X 17″ boards
and screw them together to make a rectangle. Repeat twice.

Step 4.

Attach the two side pieces together, by screwing in 2 X 21″ on both
sides, this will provide the top support to the box.

Step 5.

On the bottom side, you want to screw in 4 x 24″ boards. Two of them
line up with the sides and the other two provide support in the middle.

Step 6.

Roll out the chicken wire and attach really tight to the outside of
your frame using the hammer and the u-shaped nails.

Step 7.

Attach the landscape fabric to the inside using your staple gun.
This helps keep your soil in whilst allowing for drainage.

Step 8.

The burlap is attached outside the box, on top of the chicken wire
using the staple gun. This completes the box.

Step 9.

Use the scissors to cut out some shapes in the burlap and chicken
wire. You want approx. 12 holes per side for strawberries.

Step 10.

Screw on the four castors to the bottom of your box using the drill.

Step 11.

DIY Grow Box

Fill in some potting soil, before pushing in PVC pipes in the middle
of each side. Then fill in the rest of the potting soil.

Step 12.

If you are growing beans, then your teepee will be the last thing
that you put on top of the soil in the grow box.

Be careful when you cut your chicken wire, you do not want to leave any sharp edges. You can leave out the castors, but that will make it very difficult for you to move the box, it no longer becomes portable. The PVC pipes along the sides of the box help you water the box evenly.

You can plant your seeds and your seedlings in the top and the side of the box. Instead of planting strawberries on the sides you could do herbs too, or do herbs on some sides and strawberries on other sides. Lettuce will grow on the sides too. Don’t forget to water your grow box!
