DIY 55 Gallon Drum Smoker

I never thought I would like smoking things, until the day I spent the whole day smoking different things at my cousin’s place. Today he sent me this design for this diy homemade drum smoker.

You can smoke a variety of things in this smoker from cornish game hens, ribs, scallops, shrimp, crab legs, ribeye and even corn. It is not a complicated project either to take on.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • old food grade 55 gallon barrel
  • 3/4″ nipples with caps
  • plywood
  • ball valve
  • metal coal grate
  • long bolts
  • metal cooking rack
  • thermometer
  • grinder or sand paper
  • high heat grill paint
  • small bolts
  • hand drill
  • hand jig saw
  • metal handle
  • weather protectant (optional)
  • hooks (optional)
  • shelf brackets (optional)

Make sure your barrel is clean before you begin this project. I would recommend you use a food grade barrel instead of one that stored toxic chemicals. The bottom intake valve is the first thing  that goes into your smoker.

Before you start drilling your holes for the grates, you may want to measure and trace a line around the barrel to ensure, they are level all the way round. The table on the side is an optional edition, I think initially I will leave this out on our version.
