DIY 12V Heater Made From Old Toaster

Here’s a little project you can try the next time you want throw out a toaster. You can build this homemade 12v heater from an old toaster. This little baby can get any room pretty ‘toasty’. Lol. Another one of those diy projects that recycles materials and stuff that would have otherwise found its way to a local dump.  The bolts and washers will  cost you about $3, if you do not already have some.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • old toaster
  • 12V battery
  • nuts, bolts and washers
  • copper wire
  • old cd rom drive fan
  • plastic wire connectors
  • Metal strapping
  • on/off switch or clamps (optional)

The toaster casing has to be removed in order for you to be able to access the heating coils and rewire them to run on a DC current. The fan is connected to the heater circuit, that allows it to automatically turn on when the heater is connected to the battery.

You can hook it up to a 12V battery bank, which is a very common configuration. It also allows you to use solar panels or an engine with an alternator to charge the battery and run the heater. No inverter is required you just plug it in directly to the 12V battery. In just a minute, this heater can produce heated air that is more than 120 degrees F.
