DIY $1 Portable Solar Cooker

In a previous post, we looked at how to build a diy $1 solar water heater. Today, it is all about the diy $1 portable solar cooker  also known as the Windshield Shade Solar Funnel Cooker. We could say this is the sister  to the other one as it uses the same main material for the project. The reflective accordion-folded car windshield shade, which you can get from any dollar store for about a buck.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • A reflective accordion-folding car sunshade
  • A Cake rack (or wire frame or grill)
  •  4 ½ in. of Velcro
  • Black pot
  • Bucket or plastic wastebasket
  • A plastic baking bag
  • Sewing needle and thread

The hardest part of the assembly process will probably be the sewing on of the Velcro onto the shade as it has to be done by hand. This type solar cooker has been successfully used to cook all kinds of veggies, bake bread and even cook lasagna. You can expect to get a high temperature of – a little above 350 degrees F. Best of all this cooker is very portable, just fold and pack away when you are done.
