Canning Pears

To all my fellow prickly pear lovers, unfortunately this post is about the original grand father of pears, also known as THE PEAR! Yes, today we will be adding to the list of fruits that we preserve using the canning method. With that being said, are you ready to discover how to can pears?

First things first, I maybe wrong but I do not believe you are able to can pears while they are still green. Personally I always wait for them to ripen before, canning them. Also you can choose whether to leave them peeled or unpeeled. If you decide to peel them, just be prepared for a little more extra work.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • ripe pears
  • canning jars with lids
  • funnel
  • jar lifter
  • ladle
  • sugar
  • water
  • small pot
  • kitchen towel
  • water bath canner
  • peeler (optional)
  • lemon juice (optional)
  • fruit fresh (optional)

As always start by sanitizing your jars and keep them warm until it is time to pack the pears into them. Meanwhile you can make the syrup by dissolving the sugar in the water over medium heat in the pot. Also wash your pears, before peeling, coring and cutting them into quarters. Use the lemon juice or fruit fresh if you do not like your fruit to suffer from discoloration before placing them into the hot syrup.

Transfer your hot pears into the jars and the fill the jar up to half an inch below the rim with the syrup. Make sure you get rid of any air bubbles, before screwing on the lids and loading the jars into your canner. Process pint jars for 20 minutes and quarts for 25 minutes. Use the jar lifter to lift the jars onto the kitchen towel on your counter. Leave the jars to cool and seal, I do it overnight.
